European standard EN388

The EN388 test (or Couptest) measures cut resistance based on the number of repetitive cuts required to cut through a fabric with a constant load. It measures not just cut resistance, but also tear and puncture resistance, as well as abrasion.

All results are compared to cotton. So a cut index of 5, means that the fabric being tested is 5 times more cut resistance than cotton (note: because the blade dulls quickly this test isn't suitable for gloves containing steel wire).
